Book Artists: Check this out

This is a different take on a book that I found today:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y73D9KvWgNY

I subscribe to Ouotes of the Day

Two of the quotes tickled my funny bone today:

To his dog, every man is Napoleon; hence the constant popularity of dogs. - Aldous Leonard Huxley, 1894 - 1963
Don't accept your dog's admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful. - Ann Landers, 1918 - 2002

I am not a dog owner right now, but have had great dogs in my past!

Quote of the Day is a great free service that you should check out.

Rainbow Artists First Annual Picinc in the Park

We held our first annual Picinic in the Park at "Hidden Park"
and invited our new friends the women of the Willow Collective
We had a very good time.

These are beautiful people, and they are so courageous
in coming to a country where they do not even speak the language.
I have a video, but was not able to upload it, may have been too large.
Will try again later.

Cute kitteh picture

I love the Icanhazcheezburger.com site.
I got a chuckle out of this one this AM.
I have a very busy weekend planned,
so might be next week before I post again.

Solstice Celebration

I did something unusal for me, I was in a performance piece yesterday. Called 60 Water Weaving Women (aka Women in White, with Buckets!) at the Open Space Visitors Center in Albuquerque.
I don't have pictures yet (friends took some, but I do not have them yet) be we (about 32 of us) dressed in white and carried buckets on our heads to the La Orilla Canal and did a water ceremony with willow leaves.
I am not sure how well we did, but it was fun and then we walked the labrynth at the Spiritual Renewal Center.
Some quotes regarding water from the progarm:

60 Water Weaving Women is a celebration of water ispired by La Orilla Canal, the Bosque {vegatation area along the River and Canals}, and the waters of Northern New Mexico. This ritual performance honors water with gratitude and encourages awareness of the tireless presence of this essential life force. Ritual performance bridges art and spirituality. - quote from program

Love the Pitcher less and the water more. - Sufi proverb

We are of the water and the water is us. When water is threatened all living things are threatened. What we do to water, we do to ourselves. - From the Hopi declaration of water.

I went on the Silk Road Tour today. My friend
Suzanne and her fellow silk artists had a studio
tour and I was unable to resist the butterfly piece
above. I don't usually buy art unless it REALLY
speaks to me, and this piece did. It is a really
shimmery silk piece with multiple layers and this
picture does not really do it justice.

A great quote from Rosalie Dace in Quilting Arts (Jan/Feb 2008). This is probably why I am so drawn to fabric:

"Fabric is so much more part of the human condition. From the time you're born and they clean you up, you're wrapped in fabric. Fabric is protective, comforting, denotes social status...we celebrate with it by wearing it on special occasions throughout our lives. And of course we sleep on it. Every night we lie in bed, one sheet under, one on top."

I am so glad that my friend returned this particular issue, as I am re-reading and found it a great issue.

I had an interesting experience yesterday. I was an "expert witness" at a wedding. A couple came to Albuquerque from New Hampshire (I LOVE that accent) to be married by my friend Mayra, who does destination weddings.

If you are in the Albuquerque tomorrow, some friends and I are perfoming a piece called "60 Water Weaving Women" at 2:30 tomorrow at the Open Space Visitors Center on Coors north of Montano.

This resoanated with me....

A friend returned a Cloth,Paper,Scissors magazine dated Jan/Feb 2008. As I ate dinner last night, I was reading and this struck me as a very valid statement:

Dear Jane:
By Loretta Benedetto Marvel
What could be more thrilling than being an artist during the first decade of the new millennium? Art and Craft are flourishing with a zeal that has not been seen in decades. ...The world is coming 'round again to embracing creativity as the spiritual lifeblood of this planet, and not as a frivolous activity that is the first to be cut in a school budget crunch. You don't even have to leave your home to witness this new Renaissance. The Internet allows us a portal into the lives of hundreds of thousands of artists who gladly share their passion with anyone with a high speed connection.
Why then am I in such a funk after a visit to the local craft store? Aisles and asiles of pre-packaged, merchandised sitckers, stamps and collage elements make me wonder what's the point of it all? Why do many of the latest books and magazines feature what I call "Sepia Cherub with Wings and Crown Syndrome" instead of a creative explosion of post-modern and contemporary ideas? I think it is just another symptom of the proliferation of instant gratification: microwave dinners; digital photos; instant "art".

My particular gripe is the Doe Eyed, pouty red mouthed, pre-pubescant, raven haired waifs. If you create doe eyed pouty mouthed waifs, I apologize but they drive me crazy! Just my personal opinion.
Let's all be standard bearers in the "Creative explosion of post-modern and contemporary ideas"!!!!!

Isn't this luscious looking?

Chocolate brown and pink, the beginnings of a quilt
for Ms. Hally Hall. She was born this week (early)
and I was not ready! Anyway, had to get right on her quilt!
Here it is pieced and I will try to finish tomorrow.

This is really scary to me

I saw a bumper sticker that really creeped me out:

Sarah Palin
2012

Scary isn't it?

Deer on my early morning walk

I got up extra early for my walk this AM, and on the trail saw two deer AND I DID NOT HAVE MY CAMERA! Farther on down the trail, I saw two coyotes. The extra 15 minutes really made a difference. Next time I will take my camera.

I am so lucky to have acres and acres of open space area around my condo and a great multi-mile walking trail. I have seen rabbits and lots of birds, but never any larger animals.

This is the area behind my condo that we keep
natural. You can see the Sandia Mountains in the background.

Back from vacation

Well, I have returned from my week's vacation,
and I guess that I am ready to return
to work tomorrow. As I was approaching Amarillo on I-40, I was amazed
to see this road sign. I was going too fast to stop
(even tho I was doing the speed limit), so I turned
around and went back just to get this picture.
This spelling is very rare...
This could only happen in Texas (at a rest stop...)

This is the historic marker in Mayhill, NM. My grandfather
used to find arrowheads all of the time in his yard. This is one of the few (ONLY???) tunnels in NM.
As a child, we would never drive through the tunnel
without honking the horn. We used to have to take
turns on which kid got to honk the horn.
This is heading west from Cloudcroft/High Rolls.

This is the west side of the tunnel.
To this day, I have never driven through this
tunnel without honking the horn, and I have
passed this on to my son!
I don't know if there was not anything really senic,
or if I have just traveled this road too many times!

Vacation here I come.

I had such a nice weekend, and my Monday and Tuesday were not half bad, I worked by myself on Monday and then had a short day today before beginning my week's vacation. I am off to Dallas to see my son and his family and to touch base with some friends there. Hope to squeeze in some intersting things, maybe a museuem or something, but maybe not.
I will be out of touch for a few days.
